Saqlain Mushtaq born on 29th of December 1976 in Lahore, Pakistan is a great off-spinner in the world of cricket. He started his cricketing career from MAO College Lahore and lifted the championship trophy for three consecutive years. Being an off-spinner was his dream and he always tried hard to make his dream come true.
Why an Off-spinner ?
In an interview with ESPNCricinfo Saqlain puts the blame on his health; he says, “I never wanted to be a quick bowler. I was very skinny and never had too much strength in the body.” His being skinny and week became a blessing for him and his country as he became a magical off-spinner Pakistan and even World ever seen in a life time.
How It Started:
Saqlain Mushtaq in the age of 17 started his first class career and during the first session he took 52 wickets which directed the focus of all eyes towards him and he got selected in Pakistan A team. In 1995 fate provided him a chance to play against Sri Lanka and he availed it to show the magic of his right arm by sending seven (7) Sri Lankan batsmen back to pavilion while playing from PCB’s Patrons 11. Saqlain bagged 833 wickets in 196 first class matches while maintaining an average 23.56 with strike rate 53.5 and economy 2.63. His best was 8 for 65.
International Career :
Saqlain made his test and one day debut in September 1995 against Sri Lanka.
Saqlain played 49 test matches in total and preyed 208 batsmen maintaining average 29.83, strike rate 67.6 and economy 2.64. His best bowling in an inning was 8 for 164 and in a match 10 for 155. His One day career is not much different from his test career. He played 169 matches got 288 wickets with average of 21.78, strike rate 30.4, economy 4.29, his best bowling was 5/20
Saqlain was selected as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the year in 2000. In 2003 according to an analysis conducted by Wisden he was ranked as the all-times best ODI spinner of the world.
