North Korea to establish own time zone

North Korea has announced it will establish its own time zone by pulling back its current standard time by 30 minutes on 15 August 2015.

Local time in North and South Korea and Japan has been the same since Japan’s rule over ‘Korea’ from 1910 to 1945. The North’s official Korean Central News Agency said that the establishment of “Pyongyang time” was aimed at rooting out the legacy of the Japanese colonial period.

“The wicked Japanese imperialists committed such unpardonable crimes as depriving Korea of even its standard time while mercilessly trampling down its land with 5,000-year-long history and culture and pursuing the unheard-of policy of obliterating the Korean nation,” the KCNA dispatch said.
