Dr. Muhammad Amjad Saqib a medical graduate from the most reputed Pakistani Medical College King Edward Medical College Lahore served Pakistan as a bureaucrat from 1985 to 2003. His service at Punjab Rural Support Programme from 1998 to 2003 made him realize the potential and requirement of philanthropic work in Pakistan. Perhaps this was the drive behind establishment of Akhuwat in 2001.
After his resignation from civil services in 2003 he started to stretch wings, at that time Akhuwat was disbursing interest free small loans of PKR 1,000/- to needy people. The loan project of Akhuwat was so transparent and so effective that Punjab Government instead of starting its own initiative put PKR 2 billion in Akhuwat’s kitty, since then not only the limit of loan has increased from PKR 1,000/- to PKR 10,000/- but also the volume of the micro-finance interest free credit has increased on huge bases. Akhuwat is now covering almost all major cities of Punjab as even some cities of other provinces.
